The long sought Northwest Passage was finally conquered in1906 by Roald Amundsen in the little sloop GJOA, sailing east to west over three years. True commercial sail, ships dependent on sail alone, visited the coast in ever decreasing numbers. The final chapter was written in 1946 when the big barque PAMIR dropped her tow off Cape Flattery and sailed off into a rising gale.
