Morning Mist – Hastings Mill
Watercolor 11” x 22”
After the arrival of the railroad, Vancouver’s waterfront was transformed. Hastings Mill was still the dominant feature , but all of the shore from the mill site into Coal Harbour was soon filled in with wharves and warehouses. Vancouver’s first steamship company, Union Steamships, was incorporated in 1889 and operated from a wharf to the east of the mill. Between the larger wharves smaller enterprises crowded in, mainly fishermen, and tug boat companies operating the growing fleet of tugs needed to tow logs to the mills, and square riggers out to Cape Flattery.
