Hastings Mill Moonlight.
1887

Watercolor 19" x 29"

Hastings Mill was the first industry established on the south shore of Burrard Inlet and was the nucleus around which the city of Vancouver grew. The mill was established by Captain Edward Stamp in 1865, and with several owners over the years, was a prosperous and expanding business until after WW1. Although in decline, it continued to operate almost to the beginning of the Depression.

The PRINCESS LOUISE was purchased by the Hudson's Bay Company in 1878 for the Victoria to New Westminster run. In 1883 the Canadian Pacific Navigation Co. was formed by the amalgamation of the HBC and their old rival, the Pioneer Line. That year the PRINCESS LOUISE was installed on the newly inaugurated daily service between Victoria and Burrard Inlet. She later became part of the Princess fleet of the CPR’s coastal service, and when she was converted to a barge in 1906 she was the last surviving sidewheeler in the coastal passenger service.
