In 1791 Captain George Vancouver was dispatched in two vessels by the British Government to survey the coast from Spanish California to Russian Alaska. In the summer of 1792 he surveyed the Inside Passage from Puget Sound to Queen Charlotte Strait, and in the two subsequent years completed the most comprehensive survey of the coast from northern California to Cook Inlet in Alaska.
