SAN CARLOS in Golden Gate.
1775
Watercolor 14" x 21"
With the moon rising over the hills to the east the SAN CARLOS entered the narrows at 8:30 PM against a strongly ebbing tide, and with a stiff wind from WSW, was still only able to make half a knot. Finally gaining the bay she held to the north along the Marin shore until the wind died, and she was forced to anchor to prevent being set backwards by the current. In twenty-two fathoms she lay all night off what is now known as Old Sausalito.
