The sixteenth century saw an explosion of voyages of discovery, at first primarily by the Crowns of Portugal and Spain, but soon followed by England, France and eventually by Dutch and Yankee entrepreneurs. At the end of the century the world had been circumnavigated four times, and by the end of the eighteenth century only the Northwest Passage was left to be charted.
